AP Language & Composition
Students entering AP Language & Composition are expected to read at least two nonfiction books of choice and begin the school year prepared to share and discuss. Looking for nonfiction texts and not sure where to start? Check out these suggested titles, and see below for additional recommendations from our MPS Library Media Specialists and Milford Public Library.
Optional Learning Activity - Practice your skills! As you read, students are encouraged to select FIVE pages of one of the books, scan or take photos of the pages, and annotate the text. Effective annotations should include the following:
Support of the author’s main argument or thesis;
Key literary techniques employed in the development of the author’s argument;
Key rhetorical techniques employed in the development of the author’s argument;
Insightful observations of the text or comments on the author’s ideas;
Probing questions about the structure of the text or the author’s communicated ideas.

Questions, observations, and reflections of the content as well as the writing;
A variety of topics marked for discussion;
A variety of stylistic devices marked with insightful observations about their affect and/or purpose;
Insightful observations of the text or comments that demonstrate analysis and interpretation - thinking beyond the surface level of the text;
Thoughtful connections to other texts.
