Tradition of Excellence

The Mt. Greylock Track & Field Team has a tradition of excellence stretching back to 1969. Competing behind the school on a cinder track until 1987 (and still practicing on the same track that is now grass) Mt. Greylock athletes have always found a way to excel. "Excellence as an attitude" is developed through disciplined training, spirited team atmosphere, and love of the process of improvement. We want to be better every day than we were the day before.

Winning track meets is not the major goal of our program, but we have done our fair share of winning over the years. The boys boast 12 Western Mass. Championships while the girls have won more championships than any other team in Western Mass with 22.

Boys Western Mass. Champions - 1973, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1989, 2006, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024

Girls Western Mass. Champions - 1978, 1983, 1984, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2018, 2021, 2023, 2024

In addition, we have had several Mass. State and New England Champions including Alison White (2 Mile), Candida McCarthy (2 Mile), and 3 time state champion and 2 time New England champion Colleen Farley (800m and 300 Hurdles). We have even had athletes compete at Nationals including 2019 3rd place Long Jump Madison Ross.

While no one would say that winning hasn't been fun, we recognize that winning is never the best goal for an athlete. Winning is a result that is often beyond our control. We do not generally determine how good our competition will be. We do, however, determine how good we are. The major goal of our program therefore is individual improvement. We want our athletes to do their best and specifically to be able to be their best when it matters the most...in championship moments and at championship meets.

Tradition can be defined as a way of thinking, behaving, or doing something that has been used by the people in a particular group for a long time. It is now up to you to continue to pass on the Mt. Greylock Track and Field tradition of excellence by how you train, by your spirit of fun and encouragement, and by your will to compete to the best of your ability.
