Only MDIHS students will be admitted to the dances. However, for certain dances such as the Senior Prom and Homecoming, this policy may be waived by the Principal. In the cases when guests are allowed, students will be expected to sign up their guests prior to the dance with the Dean of Students. At no time will students not in high school or older than 20 be allowed to attend a school dance.
During the dance, only certain designated areas will be open to students. This will vary slightly depending on where the dance is held, but the Academic Hallways are always off limits. The doors to the areas off limits will be clearly marked. Students found in the other part of the school will be requested to leave the dance and the school property.
The time for the dance is set in consultation with the principal. Doors are closed one hour after the start of the dance.
When a student leaves the building, they will not be readmitted to the dance and will be expected to leave the school property. Students needing to access something outside of the building will need to be escorted by a chaperone.
All exits are to remain free in case of emergencies. There should be no loitering in the lobby area or other entrance/exit areas.
The principal will determine the need to hire a police officer for the dance.
The advisor and the ad hoc Dance Committee are responsible for the following:
Supervision of the main entrance.
Making certain that the chaperones and the police officers are aware of the MDIHS dance policies.
Making certain that the advisor is available to supervise students during set-up and clean-up time.
Recruiting the appropriate number of staff chaperones as determined by the principal.
Student bags will be subject to possible search and will be kept in a supervised classroom during the dance.
The Mount Desert Island High School Substance Abuse Policy is in effect at all dances.
The School Dress Code is in effect at all school dances.
All students are expected to be face-to-face while dancing.
Any student who violates any school rules, will follow the Mount Desert Island High School Policies and may be barred from attending school dances for a period of up to one year from the time of the offense, this is in addition to any other consequences as determined by administration and/or the Hearing Committee.
