Students who are disruptive in the classroom can have a tremendous effect on the education of other students in the class. Because of the potential impact, this type of behavior may have on the teacher and other students, this behavior will not be tolerated. The following is the procedure for dealing with students who are disruptive:
Step 1
Address the situation with the student that clarifies expectations, having a restorative dialogue, and/or a reminder of class norms.
Step 2
If the behavior continues, parents are to be contacted and notified of the situation, what actions the staff member has taken to address the situation, and what will happen in the future if the behavior continues.
Step 3
The teacher will notify the Dean of Students of the behavior, call home to inform the parent the behavior is continuing, and inform the student's case manager if the behavior is disability related. The teacher has the option of assigning a before or after school detention or other appropriate consequence (e.g. seating assignments, limiting times out of the classroom).
Step 4
The student will meet with the Dean of Students. An accountability agreement may be written, with a copy going home to the parent(s) and one to the teacher to outline how behavior will improve and the consequences if the behavior continues. The Dean of Students may also assign a Friday or Saturday Detention or possibly suspend the student
Step 5
If the student fails to live up to the agreement or the behavior in question returns the student should be referred to the Dean of Students. The Dean of Students will assign an appropriate consequence as outlined in the accountability contract. Consequences may include detention time, suspension, or having the student appear before the Review Board.
Step 6
A meeting with the student, administration, staff member, and parent(s)/guardian(s). This meeting may also include a Guidance Counselor and case manager, when applicable. The purpose of the meeting is to determine the cause of the continued behavior and appropriate consequences and/or actions if the behavior continues
Step 7
If the undesired behavior continues, student removal from the classroom will be considered.
