4th Graders can choose from 3 instruments to play: violin, viola, or cello. All three instruments come in several sizes and can be chosen by any student of any size. As students grow, they can switch to larger instruments until they reach full size. Read below for more information on each instrument.
The VIOLIN is the smallest instrument and often plays the melody. It has the highest sound. It is played under the chin.
The VIOLA is the second largest string instrument and often plays the harmony. It is played under the chin and has a medium sound.
The CELLO is played sitting down and has a low sound. It is the biggest instrument 4th graders can play.

Pros include you have insurance against damages and are able to change instrument sizes easily. A music store representative visits each school weekly and can easily bring your student items.
One time investment rather than monthly rental payments, however, may have to deal with trying to sell the instrument later if your child grows to a bigger size.
Especially worth considering for students who are ready for a full size instrument.
Provides the pride of ownership.
You may already have an instrument in the family. Make sure the instrument is the correct size for your student and in proper playing condition, especially if it hasn't been played in a while!
MCPASD owns a LIMITED fleet of school instruments reserved specifically for families that are not able to afford an instrument from a music store. Contact your teacher to discuss this option.
Please do not buy instruments over the Internet without talking to your teacher first! These instruments might sound like a great bargain, but they often require high maintenance and additional repairs. The quality of your child's experience will be lowered by a poor quality instrument.
