o Continuity over Quantity. More days practicing for less time is better than fewer days practicing for more time. Practicing for 10 minutes on four days will be much more effective that 40 minutes on one day!
o Find a quiet space to practice in, with a stand if you have one.
o Make sure your fingernails are short! Long fingernails will click against the fingerboard and make good left-hand posture difficult.
o If you can, practice at the same time every day. Scheduling your practice will help you practice more often.
o Make sure you have everything you need to practice before you start practicing. That way, you don’t have to stop your practice time to go look for your book or set up your stand.
o Ask for help! If you regularly have trouble with your instrument or something we learn in orchestra, ask your teacher about it. They love to help make playing an instrument easier for you!
A good rule of thumb for beginning orchestra students is to practice for 10-15 minutes three to five days a week.
