This semester we will study our past from prehistory (before writing), to the ancient civilizations and middle ages, and through the modern era. You will have the opportunity to do projects focusing on topics you may be interested in and I hope you leave the class with a greater understanding of the evolution of society through time. We will have many opportunities to use Chromebooks for our work, and I hope you enjoy the class. Please feel free to talk to me or email me if you have questions or concerns this semester.
Much of what we do this semester will be based around what I use as our core text. It is called the Student’s Friend, and I think it is an excellent resource for our class. It offers a very concise overview of world history without getting bogged down with too much trivia, that can distract from understanding the general concepts and overall flow of history. It is only 48 pages, as opposed to most text books that are upwards of 900-1,000 pages. I hope that you will keep the Student’s Friend in mind in the future for other classes in high school or college that may require a working understanding of world history.
The Student’s Friend is available online, for free, at the following web address (it is also linked to on this web page): http://www.studentsfriend.com/sf/downsf.html (You can download a .pdf, .doc, or just view the text online.)
Much of our work will be listed in our Google Classroom: https://classroom.google.com/h
You should keep a notebook throughout the course of the semester and save your returned work. This will benefit you when it is time to prepare for the final exam. I will give you a participation grade each six weeks for consistently having materials with you, when you come to class. This includes your Chromebook, pen/pencil, paper, colored pencils, and and extras I request.
My basic “rule” is simple. RESPECT. I will respect you, others, and myself. Please do the same. I look forward to a good class and hope you will also adopt and help accomplish that goal.
Thanks!
