Welcome to World Religions! From the very beginning of human civilization, religion is something that has shaped our world and it continues to do so. Some of the world’s most impressive and iconic structures are those created for religious purposes. Whether you follow these religions or not, as a society we still live with that legacy in holidays that are recognized, rituals or ceremonies that are observed or codes of behavior. This class is not about promoting or inhibiting religion but merely to look at its origins, its core beliefs, and how it continues to affect people today. We will examine Christianity, Judaism, Hindu, Buddhist, Confucianism, Shinto, and Islam as well as other beliefs. Students will gain a perspective of how these various religions are different, but also how they are more often than not quite similar to one another. In this class, participation is CRUCIAL! Be prepared to take notes, and participate in class discussions as well as completing required assignments and projects. Religion is an intense thing, it can be quite profound to those who believe and also has been the source of incredible conflicts throughout history. If you bring a positive, working attitude I have little doubt this will be an enjoyable course.
In this course we will also be using the online learning website Google Classroom. Google Classroom is a teacher controlled 'virtual classroom' that allows me to extend the learning beyond our normal class time in a fun and interactive way.
