Animated DNA tutorial — DNA from the Beginning is an animated tutorial on DNA, genes and heredity. The science behind each concept is explained using animations related to DNA topics, an image gallery, video interviews, problems, biographies, and links related to DNA. There are three sections, Classical Genetics, Molecules of Genetics and Organization of Genetic Material. Key features are the clear explanations of classical experiments and the excellent photographs of researchers and their labs.
Bacteria and Virus animations — This site has a module from the Supersite, "DNA From the Beginning." This learning object shows animations of bacteria and viruses to introduce concepts such as conjugation, transduction, and transformation. The Supersite contains many other animated tutorials on DNA, genes and heredity. The science behind each concept is explained using animations, an image gallery, video interviews, problems, biographies, and links. There are three sections for the Supersite including Classical Genetics, Molecules of Genetics, and Organization of Genetic Material. Key features are the clear explanations of classical experiments and excellent photographs of researchers and their labs.
DNA lab — This is a lab and discussion activity that allows students to make a DNA "recipe" that they can then translate into a drawing of the phenotypic characteristics from the genotype of their organism.
Genetic Code — This site contains a module from the Supersite, "DNA From the Beginning." This learning object explains how the genetic code was deciphered. It also provides information about the role of codons and anticodons in protein synthesis.
Genetics Activity — This site allows students to artificially Select Dogs (students breed dogs for certain desired traits)
Genetics experiments — This site is an animated primer of 75 experiments that made genetics.
Genetics game — Teaching Genetics with dragons has several activities for students. Explore heredity and genetics by experimenting with breeding and studying virtual dragons. Learn about genetics while breeding dragons in this game-based learning environment.
Genetics lab - breeding pigeons — This site provides an in-depth study and lab of real work genetics: breeding pigeons.
Genetics Unit — This site contains a unit of study for genetics and shows the application of mathematics to this study. The unit consists of explanations of the process of genetic inheritance, and the description and use of punnett squares and pedigree charts. Students learn about genetics while reinforcing their mathematic skills using percentages, ratios, graphing, charts, and data analysis. Lessons range from reading and creating pedigree charts to collecting, plotting, and organizing data about physical characteristics.
Genetic Variation — This site introduces all basic topics in traits and inheritance, genetic variation, chromosomes and inheritance, etc. Slide shows and videos, with text. Great for students and teacher background knowledge.
Heredity Tutorials — This site has five tutorials covering basic cell structures, cell reproduction (mitosis and meiosis), recombinations and linkage, sex linked genes, and the molecular level of genetics. Each tutorial includes nice illustrative photos and figures, a multiple choice quiz that gives prompt feedback on correct or incorrect answers, and a glossary.
Independent Assortment Video — You tube - Mendel's Law of Independent Assortment
Inheritance Podcast — This podcast discusses inheritance.
Interactive Mendel's Law of Genetic Inheritance — This interactive activity, adapted from the Dolan DNA Learning Center, illustrates how a tool developed by scientist Reginald Punnett—the Punnett square—validates Gregor Mendel's laws of genetic inheritance. The viewer can watch how the Punnett square can be used to display the possible genetic outcomes when two yellow-seed hybrid pea plants are crossed.
Mendel's Experiments video — This you tube video gives an explanation of Mendel's experiments.
Mendel's Three Laws - Meiosis — This site informs the viewer of Mendel's three laws through the use of meiosis.
Mendel Experiment animation — This animation provides a re-creation of Gregor Mendel’s experiments and allows one to predict the outcome of two types of genetic crosses using a Punnett square.
RNA viruses — This site has a module from the Supersite, "DNA From the Beginning." This learning shows how some viruses store genetic information in the form of RNA rather than DNA.
