Hello friends and families of B-124,
I can’t believe we have started our final IB unit! It is truly a grand finale as we have added a number of different creepy crawlies to our classroom to observe! 🐛 I am sure you have already heard all about it! Here are the details:
Transdisciplinary theme- Sharing the planet
Focus- Access to equal opportunities; rights and responsibilities in the struggle to share finite resources with other people and with other living things
Central idea- Humans depend on natural resources
Lines of inquiry:
Natural resources
Ways people use natural resources
Positive & negative human impact on natural resources
Key concepts:
Causation- Why is it like it is?
Form- What is it like?
Function- How does it work?
Learner profile attributes:
Caring- We care about others. We show love and compassion.
Principled- We do the right thing even when it is tough or when no one is looking.
Reflective- We thoughtfully consider the world and our own ideas and experiences. We work to understand our strengths and weaknesses in order to support our learning and personal development.
2nd Grade will be going to the OdySea Aquarium on Thursday, April 23! I am looking for five volunteers to help chaperone this field trip. The time commitment will be roughly 9:30am-12:15pm. Please message me on ParentSquare if you are interested. Priority will be given to parents who have not yet had the opportunity to chaperone this school year and who are on the approved volunteer list. Please check with the front office if you are not sure if you are approved. Please also be sure to complete the permission slip in ParentSquare for your child to attend. Thank you!
Our school-wide focus for the month of April is PERSEVERANCE! Please use the graphic below to discuss this idea with your child at home!
The big ideas for 4/6-10 will be:
Phonics: drop -e rule and -y to i rule ; Home Practice One; Decodable Passage One; Home Practice Two; Decodable Passage 2: Dictation Quiz Friday practicing the rules
Reading: This week, we will continue to focus on the ability to “Compare and contrast within and between text.” This critical thinking skill involves highlighting similarities and differences addressing standard 2.RI.3: Describe connections between events, ideas, or steps. We will read “The Life of a Dollar Bill” to explore the essential question: How do we use money? This expository text will show us how a dollar bill circulates.
Grammar/Writing: Students will respond to daily prompts in journals as they make mealworm observations. Students will also write an opinion piece on the most valuable natural resource using research to support their opinion.
Math: Students will review 2D and 3D shapes and draw equal parts of a fraction addressing standard 2.G.A.3: Partition (divide) circles and rectangles into equal shares like halves, thirds, and fourths, and describe those shares. We will also begin exploring multiplication concepts.
Handwriting- April Handwriting Pages.
Science/Social Studies- Students will begin exploring mealworms and respond to daily prompts in their journals. We will also learn about living and non-living resources and research some of the earth’s natural resources.
Social-Emotional Learning (SEL): We are going to discuss the importance of optimistic thinking 😀
2.RI.3: Describe the connection between a series of historical events, scientific ideas or concepts, or steps in technical procedures.
Sequence Challenge: Put mixed-up events or steps in the correct order and justify your reasoning.
Cause & Effect Match-Up: Match causes to their effects and explain how they are connected.
2.G.A.3: Partition circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares and describe the shares using fractions (halves, thirds, fourths).
Multiple Representations: Show the same whole divided into equal shares in at least two different ways.
Not Equal?: Look at shapes partitioned incorrectly and explain why the shares are not equal.
These extensions are designed to promote critical thinking and provide appropriate challenges for students who are ready to move beyond the core expectations.
