Our classroom uses a daily “light” chart to monitor class behavior. We also use Class Dojo. This is a website that allows teachers to give students immediate feedback on their behavior--positive and negative. Students get very excited when they are awarded points, and one of the best things I’ve noticed is that they are rooting for each other! They are so sweet to each other, congratulating others when they receive a positive point.
Class Dojo is going to be used in conjunction with our daily light system. The points taken for negative feedback are based on common classroom behavior problems. If a student receives 3 positive feedback points in one day, they color in a blue light on their Daily Flash. If a student receives 2 negative feedback points in one day, they color in a yellow light on their Daily Flash. These are just warnings. If it is something more serious, or a recurring issue, I will write a note on their Daily Flash, send an e-mail, or make a phone call. If a student receives 3 negative feedback points in one day, they color in a red light on their Daily Flash. Class Dojo points reset every day.
In our school-wide behavior program we have been talking about our three behavior expectations: be respectful, be responsible, and be safe. Our class has developed our essential agreements, i.e. class rules. Please check the Daily Flash daily to check your child’s behavior and initial the top portion. You may begin to notice an increase in yellow or red lights as we move through the first month, as I explicitly teach expectations and will be holding students accountable for inappropriate behavior. If you receive a minor incident report, it means that your child was not following behavior expectations in the classroom, at specials, or around campus. It must be signed and returned to school. Our loop jar continues to fill up as the students practice appropriate school behavior.
