Introduction of Courses

2nd grade is an exciting place to be at Simis!  Our International Baccalaureate transdisciplinary themes direct our learning into 6 units.  Our daily focus on the International Baccalaureate learner profile and key concepts creates inquisitive global-minded learners with the assistance of our Social Studies curriculum, IMPACT by McGraw Hill.  The Arizona College and Career Ready Standards are the basis for all our learning activities.  We develop our reading skills in an uninterrupted 90 minute reading block where we focus on the 5 pillars of reading; phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Our reading curriculum, Wonders by McGraw Hill, provides rich differentiated content to seamlessly progress all students in reading. Specific reading strategies are introduced and practiced in individual, small, and whole group settings. Our math skills are strengthened through time spent in hands on activities using manipulatives and discovering new strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems. Our math curriculum, Into Math by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, provides the rigor, personalization and student engagement to promote student growth.  Our science curriculum, Inspire by McGraw Hill, fosters students’ innate curiosity, elevates their critical thinking, facilitates hands-on investigation to deepen their understanding, and encourages creative problem-solving to inspire innovative thinking.
