Correspondence & Study Abroad English

Correspondence & Study Abroad English is for those students who have been attending Lincoln Academy for at least two years and have an approved GPA. After meeting all of the qualifications with the Director of the Study Abroad Program or the Head of the Guidance Office, the student is approved for one of two scenarios:

  • to have the experience of learning a language and its country's culture while living abroad, earning 5 life credits while doing the required US English credit;

or

  • to have the experience of focusing on a valid, approved plan or program of interest in the US, but beyond Lincoln Academy, earning 3 life credits (or work-study credits) while doing the required LA Correspondence English at the same time as being immersed in the program of interest.

Taking an English while studying abroad or immersed in a concentration of the desired study enables the student to graduate with of his/her class. This eliminates the need to return to Lincoln Academy to attend an additional year (or 5th year of high school) to earn the required English credit.

This Correspondence & Study Abroad arrangement is unique with only a few high schools in the US offering this opportunity. This does mean that the student who is accepted for this experience must do English work during the year while he/she is internationally abroad or abroad within the States. The arrangement also means the student must submit the English work at regular intervals and designated due dates to the designated English teacher who will grade the work each month, submit a trimester grade to the Guidance Office each trimester, meet with the student upon returning to finish any outstanding work and debriefing, and to grade the year's journal, which is equivalent to the "final exam" for the year's course.
