Coronavirus shutdown

These are unprecedented times. We are all in unchartered territory. But these times can also create tremendous opportunities to practice our core values - to care for others, be kind, connect with those around us, and to find community and purpose wherever we can. It is IMPORTANT that students continue to learn, absorb, progress, and excel in all their school subjects, whether or not school is actually in session. Here are some activities that can help 5th and 6th grade band students continue to improve their skills on their instrument.

#1 KEEP PLAYING YOUR INSTRUMENT - There is no shortcut in learning how to play a musical instrument. Practice is the process of getting closer to achieving your musical goals. When we practice, we take elements of our playing that we find difficult, and play them carefully until they are easy. Once what you are practicing becomes second nature, playing your instrument becomes a lot of fun. Continue to play exercises in your lesson books. You can either review material that has already been covered or go on and learn something new. You could also go over the group band pieces we have played this year, especially the songs that are to be performed on the last concert.

#2 - CLEAN YOUR INSTRUMENT - Here are some good tips on how to clean the various instruments:

#3 - EXPLORE the wide variety of music websites. Here are a few examples:

#4 - Listening Log - Keep a listening log and write down music that you hear each day. You can also record information about the songs, like the title/artist, genre, mood, time signature, tempo, instrumentation, etc., or you could draw a picture in response to the music.

#5 - Name That Tune - In addition to your current page in your lesson book, play name that tune with the people in your house. Go through your lesson books and play anything that says FOLK song. See if anyone can guess the titles or tell you the lyrics!
