The week of eco-activities is a great opportunity for students to learn some useful hands on skills for restoring a very degraded hillside on Lantau Island and finding out how the environmental damage occurred during Hong Kong’s ecological history . We will visit an ongoing 20 year old native tree restoration project which through tree planting has reduced soil erosion, enhanced the native biodiversity enriching the ecosystem with abundantly more birds and insects visiting this site and also helping to beautify the landscape. There will also be two hikes to learn more about how the ecology of Lantau is being affected and learn names of trees. Additionally one day will be spent in the school constructing a small tree nursery area and for sowing tree seeds.
The earth is in need of practitioners to help restore the forests and in the future it will need dedicated people with these skills to help heal its wounds. The more biodiversity we can save in Hong Kong and the rest of the world now is crucial for the survival of this planet.
For those students who enjoy nature or those who just want to become involved and help restore some of the Hong Kong forest ecosystem. The unique conservation skills learnt on this week’s course may help in determining your future interests.
The earth needs more hands on nature restorer practitioners.
Note: All Transport costs to and from destinations, as well as all drinks and food to be paid for by the students.
On Monday 30 October ,students meet by 8:15am in IS310 at KGV.
(Detailed itinerary below)
This is a service and activity based week. A chance to learn about the environment and contribute to a sustainable Hong Kong.
KGV Week daily schedule of activities 30th October – 3rd November
Day 1 KGV School campus- learning about the ecology and medicinal plants in Island school campus and the bokashi food waste recycling process.
Walking around the campus to learning the names of plants and tree importance of the ecology – flowering/ pollinators/seed dispersers and uses of the herbs and medicinal plants.
The importance of native biodiversity of trees and plants on the campus/school surrounds vs non native plants(plus invasive species ).
Tree and plant treasure hunt around Island school campus.
Learning skills of making herb cuttings e.g. Rosemary,Basil, mediterranean curry plant.
Making soil seed balls with native tree and plant seeds for the Lantau restoration project.
Slide show presentation on importance of the Native tree restoration project on Lantau Island’s biodiversity.
Day 2 Lantau Island - Tree landscape restoration
This is hands on practical for students the who will be shown and gain the beginnings of unique skills in native tree restoration for this ecological landscape project.
Shown how to collect tree seeds when, where and how and collecting some for sowing at school?
Digging in seed soil balls in restoration site.
The restoration maintenance will include watering seedling trees, making protective tree seedling guards and erecting them, weeding around the tree seedlings, applying protective mats to the seedling trees etc.. Distributing soil seed balls made the previous day.
Day 3 Lantau Island -Ecology restoration
More ecological restoration skills will carried out on the Lantau based ecological forest restoration site.
The restoration maintenance will include watering seedling trees, making protective tree seedling guards and erecting them, weeding around the tree seedlings, applying protective mats to the seedling trees etc..
Day 4 Lantau Island -Ecological Hike
Coastal hike from Tai O to Yi O with great sea views, including visit to the famous Tai O fishing village on stilts. From the walk we may be lucky to the see Pink Dolphins and look for crabs, mudskippers (walking fish) in bays along the walk. Also we may see one of the most poisonous fruits in Hong Kong the Sea Mango. We will also identify and learn about the significance of the native plants along the route and the importance the mangrove ecology.
Day 5 KGV school – Planting, sowing skills and setting up an automatic irrigation system . Also how to make a waste food………………………..
Students will learn how to make a small tree seedling growing area in the Campus set aside in the school for growing trees from seed. Important skills include tree seed preparation, seed sowing skills and making a seed growing media and learning some seed sowing skills for growing cotton plants from seeds(which can be taken home.
Recycling food waste is important for sustainability using the Bokashi fermentation method. There will also be an essential session on local biodiversity websites.
Making an automatic irrigation system for the tree seeds.
Using flowers for making simple quick dyes on materials .
N.B. Re-Hiking and Lantau Island restoration days
All students should be physically fit for these hiking challenges.
Please note the days and routes may be rearranged for logistical, group dynamics and or for weather reasons. If changes occur will give as much notice in advance as is possible.
