Challenge Week
2024 - November 4th to 8th
Challenge Week 2024
Monday Nov 4th to Nov 8th.
This year we are proud to offer 70+ activities to students. Students signed up in early March and we are now busy organising and preparing.
If your child wishes to travel outside of Hong Kong, please see this explanation of the costs, visa requirements, safety, behaviour expectations and deposits before proceeding.
Year 13 students will have an academically focussed week of activities.
Year 7 students only arrive at KGV in August and will have a week created specifically for them.
What is Challenge Week?
Challenge Week is an important part of our curriculum. The focus is to provide students with an opportunity to learn through new experiences outside of the regular classroom. All the activities aim to provide engagement with Creativity, Activity and Service and provide opportunities for students to engage in experiential learning, form deep memories, make new connections and challenge themselves.
The choice, opportunities and shared experience make this a key opportunity to address our school vision, for students to find their passions, feel a sense of belonging, develop holistically and maybe even take a step towards being their own remarkable.
Challenge Week 2023 was incredible with students engaging in 59 different activities across Hong Kong, Europe, China and Taiwan.
The videos below show some of the activities from November 2023.
They are only visible to KGV students and staff.

Government regulations regarding vaccination and extra-curricular activities.
To participate in certain "mask off" activities a student must be fully vaccinated by Challenge Week. This is generally 3 vaccination shots before October 17th, however, there are exceptions and we have guidance here regarding what vaccination status satisfies the government requirements. Students will not be allowed to participate otherwise and we may not be able to refund any fees already paid. "Mask off" activities will be clearly labelled.
In 2022 we will not attempt any overseas travel. All activities will be local.
The cost of activities this year includes a 3% online payment and admin fee required by ESF. As with all fees, where feasible, any surplus will be refunded to parents.
Refund policy - for activities with costs
Participant initiates cancellation:
I. Not entitled to a credit or refund
Initial non-refundable deposits for overseas activities. Air ticket has been reserved with the travel agent or airline by using the deposit.
Withdrawal for personal reasons, such as clashing with a tournament, examination or family matter.
Not attending the activity. Resources are reserved whether the participant attends the activity or not.
Cancellations of overseas activities after 30 April or local activities after 30 September. The school has to pay the service provider after the cancellation deadline.
II. Entitled to a credit or refund
The participant is invited as an assistant instructor to the activity.
To receive a full refund minus the non-refundable deposit, the participant must submit their cancellation request in writing on or before 30 April (for overseas activities) or 30 September (for local activities)
III. Exceptional circumstances
Exceptional circumstances arise where participation is not possible (i.e. family emergency, medical reason). The participant may email a request with the supporting documents to the activity leader listed on the CW website for consideration of a credit or refund.
When another participant takes the place, a full refund in credit will be given.
When a full refund from the service provider is given to the school, a full refund will be given to the participant.
When a partial refund from the servicer provider to the school, a concomitant portion of refund in credit will be given to the participant.
For a participant who withdrew from the school, a full refund or a partial refund minus 5% administrative charge will be given to the participant. This depends on the amount of the refund from the service providers.
School initiates cancellation:
I. School will credit or refund to participants
The activity is forced to cancel due to COVID or unforeseen circumstances.
The activity is forced to cancel due to the temporary facility closure due to weather, emergency, facility improvement or community related concerns. Credit for the session missed will be given to the participants.
II. School will not credit or refund to participants
Deposit is paid to the service providers who then give no refund to the school.

About the activity:
The weeks photography will bring the students a new dynamic skill. One which will help them discuss styles and techniques in photography.
The students will end with an impressive physical and virtual exhibition, that they will present to viewers, emotionally and technically.
The week will consist of understanding where influences come from, how idea form and how to get to the end image. The students will start to create their own stories and bodies of work through the lens, eventually working toward a final piece to display and discuss.
You will see the students research and experiment with photography, creativity and find influences, unfolding through a sketch book of ideas.
The workshop will cover the main elements of photography needed to gain the knowledge of a photographers working world, from ideas and influences to technical knowledge, to discussions of each other’s work, through to framing their own piece and presenting it at an exhibition.
The course will have support booklets to refer to throughout and at later dates when the student wants to strengthen their new found skill.
Technical knowledge of the cameras working will cover shutter speed, iso, aperture, light metering, lenses and how shape, colour, mood, story and relevance of subjects create images.
The students will have time to learn and practice all these elements on school premises and through visits to unique places in Hong Kong. They will discover a new way of looking at the everyday and seek out interesting moments to capture.
Their final piece will capture their knowledge, emotion and influences of the week. It will be accompanied with a short written piece and an ideas scrap book to show how the artist got to the final image and will most probably represent a style the photographer never knew they had.
Throughout the week the students will be supported by photographer Georgina Adams of Image Box Photography and have access to her email if needed when not in the workshop.
Students bring their own snacks and lunch each day. The canteen will also be open.

A portable studio will be set up at school for any student curious about studio lighting, story telling in the studio and for all to practice with. A great oppotunity to learn how to shoot with studio light for future documenting work.
