Secondary Certification in Spanish

Students planning to acquire a secondary certification in Spanish--in addition to an initial certification--should address the following steps to qualify for an additional endorsement in K-12 Spanish Instruction.  Please note that you must complete an initial certification program first in order to qualify for Secondary Endorsement in Spanish in New Jersey.

STEP 1. Take 33 credits of Upper-division Spanish Courses following the Spanish BA requirements:

STEP 2. Take the following Professional Certification course:

STEP 3. Take the Methods course--

STEP 4. Take Praxis II Spanish-World Languages Exam--Test Code 5195--registration and preparation materials here:

STEP 5:  Take ACTFL OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview) and receive a score of Advanced-Low to meet NJ DOE requirements--Registration information through Language Testing International can be found at:

Once you have finished the steps above AND have completed your Initial Certification Program at Kean (in Elementary Education, Bilingual Education, Special Education or other initial certification program), you may apply to the state of New Jersey for a secondary certification in Spanish Instruction.  Use the link below to review NJ DOE requirements and application process:
