LESSONS
All 5th grade band lessons and rehearsals happen during the regular school day.
Students are given one small group lesson every 4th school day. The day and time will usually change for each lesson. Typically, the students are taught in groups ranging in size from 2-15. They are also grouped so that same instruments have lessons together. Though rare, instruments are occasionally mixed or based on ability/effort.
Small group lessons are given for 30 minutes on a rotating schedule. For example, the trumpet class may be taught at 9:00 the first lesson, 9:30 the next lesson, 10:00 the next, etc., etc. throughout the year. This schedule prevents students from missing any one class too often. Band students are expected to make up any missed work in their academic classes. This system works very well and students rarely, if ever, have academic problems in the regular classes due to band lessons.
Lesson days also rotate. Students and parents will need to watch the schedule carefully so they know which day is band day. Band meets every 4th school day NOT counting weekends or days off. A printed calendar with all the band days will be handed out.
In addition to the small group lessons, students will also have full band practice ("Big Band") every band day, along with their small group lesson. Full band practices happen during the intervention block in the band room.
