Instruments of the Band

Band has MANY different instruments and instrument sizes.  But only a few of them are appropriate for a 5th grade beginner.  It is common for students to switch to different instruments as they advance and grow.

Our 5th grade band starts with only these instruments:

• Flute

• Bb Clarinet

• Alto Saxophone

• Trumpet

• Trombone

• Baritone (also called Euphonium)

• Percussion (snare drum and xylophone). Note that this is not "drum set" but it could lead to independent learning of drum set.

As the year progresses, 5th graders may have a chance to switch to the more rare instruments.  Students will be allowed to switch based on 1) the needs of the band, 2) previous musical achievements, 3) previous levels of effort, and 4) the physical characteristics of the student.  These instruments include:

• Oboe

• Bass Clarinet

• Tenor Saxophone

• French horn

And as the student continues into middle school, even more instruments are available to switch to, including:

• Baritone Saxophone

• Bassoon

• Tuba

Switching instruments midyear due to a poor fit on the 1st instrument is also possible, although rare.
