Renting an instrument is an important step. Most students who start in band will stay in band. Therefore, rental program features, flexibility, and service are important. Here are some questions you may want to ask of any instrument dealer:
1. Does the dealer have a rent-to-own program? Most dealers will allow you to apply your rental payments toward purchase.
2. How much does the rental cost? Most dealers charge within a few dollars a month of each other. DON'T be swayed by a dealer that rents for a few dollars less monthly. If the cost is dramatically lower than most stores, be aware of the quality of the instrument. Your child's success will be diminished by a low quality instrument. Find out what benefits, discounts, and service your money is buying.
3. Are there discounts for early payoff? Shop around! Some dealers will allow as much as 30% off your balance due any time.
4. Are you obligated to buy? You should not be obligated to buy. Find a dealer that will allow you to be flexible.
5. What about protection against damage or loss? Most dealers will offer a plan to protect you against loss, damage, and repair. Also, check your homeowner's policy for coverage.
6. What other services does the dealer provide? The dealer you choose should offer on site repairs, provide you with a loaner instrument during repair, and free delivery to school or home.
