Learner Permits/State Written DL Exam
The State Written Driver License examination is on the Utah Driver Handbook. This is the test that students must pass (40+/50 questions or 80% or higher) in order to apply for a Utah Learner Permit. This test is NOT a part of the class. You must pass this test at the Driver License Division or in class with Mr. Wright
The optimal time to get your learner permit is between ages 15 years & 2-6 months. Getting your permit right on your 15th birthday is NOT recommended as it is quite common for students to NOT complete all requirements before their 16th birthday. Waiting a few weeks after will still allow for practice & completion of all requirements while making sure that you will not have to renew your permit (it expires after 1 year). NOTE: 2021--this time period may be extended to 18 months--a proposed change is awaiting final approval.
