Range Reminders

Post date: Oct 13, 2009 7:53:50 AM

    • Students are required to have a valid learner permit BEFORE the class begins, although students technically are not required to have a permit to drive on the range. Students do not need to have the permit in their possession for RHS range sessions.
    • It is expected that students have a little time behind-the-wheel learning basic starting/stopping/steering before driving in a scheduled range session. When supervising 6 teen drivers in 6 different vehicles on the range, it is necessary for safety purposes, that a student has spent some time behind-the-wheel beginning their 40 hours of practice required by law.
    • Ranges are 2 hours long. Most M-F sessions are from 3-5 & 5-7 p.m. Saturdays usually begin at 7 or 8 a.m.
    • Students will observe and "ride along" for 45 minutes prior to their first range. For example, if your first session is from 5-7 p.m., you need to arrive at 4:15 p.m. In some cases, your first range may be from 3-5 p.m. and you'll need to come on a previous day and observe--do this between 3:30-5:30 p.m. for 45 minutes.
    • The observation period allows students to gain a basic understanding of the range patterns. It is not a specific driving lesson per se.
    • Please plan ahead to attend your scheduled sessions--this is YOUR time to complete your range practice.
    • REMINDER ADVICE! Every student has the 3 range dates/times of their choice read back to them. They are instructed to write them down on their lavender card, put them in their phone, tell them to their Mom and Dad, put them on a sticky note, paste them on a bedroom wall, write them in ink on their forehead, share them with their friends, post them on the fridge. This advice is printed in The Practice Booklet and is featured during range signup days. Wise students follow it.
    • Be on time.
    • Dress appropriately for the weather. You will likely spend at least 10-20 minutes outside of the vehicle.
    • Range cancellations on school days will be announced immediately at the end of the school day. Cancellations during school holidays or on Saturdays will be made on the Dr. Ed. page which can be accessed from the RHS website (under the Academics tab).
    • Bring your lavender card.
    • IF YOU FAIL TO SHOW UP FOR A RANGE, you will not be able to reschedule a new appointment anytime soon and may receive a grade deduction on your classroom grade. You may go to ranges and take an open spot if another student fails to show and/or you will have to wait until the end of the quarter and hope there may be an opening for you. NO SHOWS COST THE PROGRAM TIME AND MONEY. Thank you for being responsible. Follow the REMINDER ADVICE and it is very unlikely you will make the error of not showing up. NO SHOWS have to wait. Sometimes the wait will be weeks and sometimes months. We have 2,400+ appointments per year. Be responsible!
