HOW TO LEARN NEW PIECES

1. WITHOUT LISTENING TO THE RECORDING:

    • Download and print your part to each piece from the links below. Notice pieces that have more than one page.
    • Look at the 'road map' for repeats.
    • Look at the Key Signature to make sure you correctly play the implied sharps/flats and accidentals.
    • Count the rhythms out loud while either clapping them, or tapping them your instrument. USE A METRONOME!

2. WHILE LISTENING TO THE RECORDING OF THE PIECE:

    • Count the rhythms out loud again, while either clapping them or tapping them on your instrument.
    • Play the notes in pizzicato.
    • Play the piece 'ghost bowing' (ie. just bowing - no sound).

3. WITHOUT LISTENING TO THE RECORDING:

    • Play the piece while simultaneously bowing and fingering the notes. USE A METRONOME!
    • Mark the difficult parts using a light pencil markings. This will help you to remember the hard parts.
    • Work out the hard parts.

NEW MUSIC: sheet music & mp3 recordings

DAILY PRACTICE ROUTINE, for Orchestra II

TUNING (1-2 minutes)

  1. Tune all strings separately with a tuner.
  2. Check you A once more. If it is still in tune, then turn off your tuner. Now tune double stops by first playing A and gradually add D. If unsure with your A and D tuning, tune your D way too low. Now, playing A again, slowly bring up the D up until the A & D combined sound is steady. Once A & D is perfectly in tune, move on. Tune D with G, (Then violas and cellos will tune G with C), and then A with E.

[PRIVATE TEACHER warm-ups/technique (10-20 min.), assignments/etudes (20 min.), & repertoire (20 min.)]

ONGOING PRACTICE TECHNIQUE (8-10 minutes) (Use a metronome on all TECHNIQUE exercises).

  1. Review "Crucial Bowings", p. 1.
  2. Play all "Crucial Bowings", p. 2.

    • Play a scale SET*. Once a set is learned, add the next set. Next day, review learned sets & add a new set.
