General Homework Expectations by subject:
Math homework is generally given Mon-Thurs of most weeks. Students will be given work time in class to complete their math most days. If students use their time wisely and are comfortable with the lesson, they should be able to complete most assignments in class. However, if a student is struggling and needs more time at home, or has not used their classroom work time as efficiently as they should, they will be required to bring their work home. Please strive to participate with your child, and/or have them show you what they've done and what we are learning in class.I am totally fine with parents looking over their child's work, and having them redo problems at home before we correct the next day in class. This is often a great help to them!
Students are expected to practice math in some way for at least 10 minutes each night. Students will be given an IXL.com username and password in the fall, and this is a GREAT site to practice math fluency(facts) as well as all of the skills we will learn in 3rd grade. They may go to that site daily as a "guest" anytime before getting their sign-on information. See "Math Links" under Parent & Student Resources for more fun math websites to visit. Other ways to practice math are: using flashcards, playing various card games, computer games, extra practice worksheets (which can be found through my Math Links tab), or any other way that you can think of. Having your child use math when you do things like go to the grocery store or bake in the kitchen are great ways to link math to real world situations! And, this "counts" as their "math homework" for the night! :)
Reading Homework:
Students are expected to read at least 20 minutes per night, and reflect on what they've read. Students may write a written response in a journal, in their planner, or they may discuss the book with a parent/sibling. Reading at home is SO important, and children can read to themselves, read aloud to someone, have someone read aloud to them, or listen to reading if they have an audio version of a book or are listening online. If they are listening to reading, please have them follow along with the words as they hear them. This helps their tracking, reading, and comprehension. Please check in with your child regularly regarding their AR points, and encourage them to meet and exceed their goals.
I generally do not give extra homework--they will only have homework if they did not finish their work at school.
Homework Policy: Homework is due by the due date given. If your child does not have his/her homework completed on time, he/she may need to stay in at recess to complete it. If homework is not complete by Friday afternoon, students will miss part or all of their "Friday Fun" time getting caught up on late work. If I see a pattern repeating itself, I will be in contact with you. I do understand that occasionally, things come up at home that make it difficult for children to get their homework completed. If this is the case, please simply send me a note so that I am aware of the situation, and I will allow for extra time to be given on an as needed basis. Homework completion is vital to academic success!
Late/Missing Work: Missing or late work will need to be completed before the end of the semester (January/May). Any unfinished work not turned in by the end of the semester will receive a failing/incomplete grade.
