Our Reading Curriculum is called Journeys. This curriculum is aligned to the Common Core Standards, and we have worked hard to make sure that our delivery of this curriculum also aligns to the MN State Standards, as well. Accelerated Reader: Princeton Intermediate is very active in using AR (Accelerated Reader) in our classrooms. Visit the link below to learn more, and please encourage your child to read at least 20 minutes at home each day, and to actively participate in earning AR points at school.
Parent's Guide to Accelerated Reader (AR)
Want to know if a book you have at home is an AR book? Go to: http://www.arbookfind.com/UserType.aspx to look up the title, book level, AR points per book, and quiz number. Have your child write the quiz number of the book they finish in their planner so that they can test on their book the next day.
1. IXL Language Arts: An EXCELLENT source to practice 3rd grade grammar skills. Log in by going to Clever.com, and signing in using your child's google log in information (their google email is their username, and their lunch number twice plus their first and last initial is their password). Choose Lang Arts, and the skill given on the weekly newsletter (or any skill they may need practice with). Such a GREAT resource to practice grammar skills, as well as reading skills that have been covered in class!
2. Storyline Online: An awesome site that allows you to listen to stories online! Most stories on this site are also AR stories, so you can take an AR test after you have listened to the story. Need to read it twice? No problem, just listen to it one more time before testing! (log in through clever.com)
3. Tumblebooks: This is a GREAT site where children can read e-books, or have them read aloud. It is simalar to RAZ Kids, although the great thing about these books is that most of them are AR books! If reading a storybook, I encourage students to read the e-book (or listen and follow along) twice, and then take the quiz that Tumblbooks offers, as well. Then, when students are at school, they can take the AR quiz, and watch their AR points SOAR! If a student is reading a chapter book, their is no need to read the book twice, but I DO encourage students to use the "note taking" option provided, and refer to them often, and especially before taking the online quiz.
Log-In Into Tumblebooks as follows: username: northelementary, password: books. (log in through clever.com at school)
5. ABCya.com: Come and enjoy some Reading and Language Arts games such as Marvin Makes Music, Sight Word Bingo, Coconut Vowels, Word Invasion, and more! All children's educational computer activities were created or approved by certified school teachers. All educational games are free and are modeled from primary grade lessons and enhanced to provide an interactive way for children to learn. Enjoy!
