Training
ORYZA Training Programs
Practical Applications of ORYZA in Rice Research
Rationale
This training program will familiarize the participants with the functions and the data organization to run the ORYZA model, experimental data collection for model calibration, evaluation, practical applications, and introduction of new features developed in the model.
Learning Objectives
At the end of the training, the participants will:
• understand the basic operations of ORYZA;
• identify and prepare the input files required for practical applications;
• understand the process & concepts of parameterization, calibration, and evaluation; and
• run the ORYZA model to generate outputs related to potential growth and yield, soil carbon sequestration, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, effects of abiotic stresses, and climate change on these variables.
ORYZA Training Program for Basic Applications
Rationale
The overall goal of this training program is to familiarize participants with the basic functions of the ORYZA model, minimum data requirement to run the model, experimental data collection for model outputs evaluation, parameter calibration, and applying your own dataset in ORYZA.
Learning Objectives
Demonstrate how processes of crop growth and development, water balance, uptake of water and nutrients, and carbon dynamics can be simulated.
Describe procedures for collecting and managing crop, experimental, weather, and soil data for model evaluation and application.
Make extensive use of “hands-on” sessions applying ORYZA to field experiments.
Give participants the opportunity to work with their own data and determine the accuracy of the model for application to specific problems.
Analyze management alternatives for individual rice season or over long-term crop rotations.
Advanced Applications of ORYZA in Rice Research
Rationale
This training aims to improve and extend the skills of ORYZA users for more advanced application studies, which may require thousands or even millions of simulations.
Learning Objectives
Managing large-scale simulations with ORYZA: data handling, input file organization, simulation management, and output analysis for regional grid-cell simulations;
Using ORYZA for climate change study: impact assessment and optimizing adaptation strategies for rice production under climate change;
Using ORYZA for rice breeding: evaluating the performance of breeding lines in a large number of environments, identifying the hot spots for dissemination of varieties, and differentiating the contribution of specific breeding traits; and
Using ORYZA for crop management optimization: optimizing cropping calendar, planting density, and water and nitrogen application for a specific site.
Prerequisites
Basic understanding of crop modeling and· basic knowledge in using ORYZA Rice Model for rice production simulation; OR
Has already taken the ORYZA training program for beginners.
Resource Persons
The developing expert group of the ORYZA model delivers the course. Participants may discuss their interests beyond the training course, including, but not limited to, collaboration, deep development, and the extension of models for applicable Apps.
