ORYZA
Training and Workshop
ORYZA Training Program for Basic Applications
4-8 April 2016
IRRI, Philippines
Rationale
Crop modeling and systems analysis have become important tools in modern agricultural research. The model ORYZA version 3 is a major rice crop model which simulates growth and development of rice in situations of potential production, water- , nitrogen-, and water-and-nitrogen - limitations. ORYZA has been used on:
the optimization of water and nitrogen management for rice;
the effects of water and nitrogen management on rice growth and yield;
the identification of constraining factors following yield determination in site-specific conditions;
the assessment of climate change effects on rice;
the exploration of management options and sustainability of rice-based cropping systems;
the evaluation of varietal performance and the effects of special traits on target environments; and
the germplasm adaptation to climate change.
Since 2009, Oryza2000 has been modified aimed mainly at abiotic stress and evolved from a rice crop model towards a rice-based cropping model. Several additional functions are currently being developed to enhance its capabilities for above mentioned application studies and also additional functions for severe abiotic stress, interaction of water and nitrogen, and continuous mono-culture rice cropping system.
As the successor of ORYZA2000, the ORYZA version 3 was released and the Crop Modeling Group of International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) wishes to assist the current and potential ORYZA users during the transition through this short training course.
Program Goal and Objectives
The overall goal of this training program is to familiarize participants with the basic functionalities and structure of the ORYZA (V3) model, the minimum data requirement, experimental data collection for ORYZA model evaluation, the calibration of parameters, and the use ORYZA on your own dataset.
Program Highlights
Demonstrate how processes of crop growth and development, water use, uptake of water, and nutrients and carbon dynamics can be simulated.
Make extensive use of “hands on” sessions that apply the ORYZA model to field experiments.
Describe procedures for collecting and managing crop, experimental, weather, and soil data for model evaluation.
Give participants the opportunity to work with their own data and determine the accuracy of the models for application to specific problems.
Analyze management alternatives for single seasons or over long-term crop rotations.
About the Workshop
The training program will be conducted based one lecture-exercise cycle for one week.
Laptop requirements for the participant:
1. The participant must bring his/her own laptop and he/she must be an administrator of his/her computer for problem-free software installation;
2. The Operating System requirements:
Windows XP, Windows 7 or Windows 8;
Microsoft Office 2007 or 2010 professional edition; and
VBA package is required
3. Laptop specs:
RAM ≥ 2GB;
free hard drive space ≥ 50GB; and
must be WiFi-enabled
Venue
The training course will be conducted at the research campus of IRRI, Los Baños, Philippines. International participants are encouraged to arrive at least one day prior to the start of the program to adjust and recover from travel fatigue.
Los Baños is small city located 60 km south of Manila and may take 1.5 hours travel time, depending on traffic conditions from Manila International Airport. We will forward travel instructions after your registration.
Accommodation
The IRRI Swaminathan Hall dormitory and IRRI Guesthouse are available. There are wi-fi access points in all buildings at the IRRI campus to provide 'almost seamless' wi-fi connectivity. Wi-fi networking on campus is meant for business use, the terms and conditions that apply to our 'cabled' research network also apply to our wi-fi services.
Registration Information
Registration Fee
The registration fee is $1100 for non-IRRI HQ participants and $150 for IRRI HQ participants. This covers for the training materials, registration services, local transportation (within IRRI campus and arrival/departure transportation between IRRI and Manila International Airport), and boarding and lodging for 6 days and 5 nights. It also includes morning and afternoon snacks. Vegetarian food is also available. Each participant will be responsible for his own insurance coverage and domestic and/or international transportation to/from Manila International Airport.
