TO ALL SPEECH CLUB MEMBERS:The following is a brief description of each area that we take to contest. You can be in a maximum of two large group and two individual events.
Try-outs and casting begins in late November. Rehearsals are in December-January.
The first contest is held the end of January.
Any number of students. Memorized lines, make-up, costumes, set, and sound effects are
all used in performing a one-act play not longer than 35 minutes -- only one entry at contest.
2 -15 students. Read from scripts. Maximum time 25 minutes. Based on a story or play.
Only one entry.
3-15 students. Read from scripts. Time 15 minutes. Based on poems, a play, or a story.
Only one entry.
2 - 8 students perform a scene with song and or dance from a musical. 10 minutes.
No costumes. Lines/Songs Memorized. Recorded music without words must be used.
Three entries allowed.
2-6 students. Memorized lines. No costumes or make-up. Choose your own pay or check speech files. Time 15 minutes. Three best entries chosen by runoffs, if more than three are entered.
2-6 students. 7 minutes. Movement without words to indicate a story or an idea.
No costumes. No makeup can be worn. Music without words may be used. Three best auditions chosen.
1 student. 5 minutes. Same as group mime. 3 best chosen.
3-15 students. Prepare newscast based on news stories gathered within the school year. DVD taken to contest for judging. Presenters include news, weather, sports, feature, camera people and technicians. Feature story written by students, and student written commercial. Two entries allowed.
2-5 students. Group chooses one situation from three that are drawn at contest. Students have two minutes to choose situation, determine roles and plot, and begin performing.
3 entries per school.
2-8 students. Prepare newscast based on news stories gathered within the school year. Audio tape or CD taken to contest for judging. News, weather, and sports must be included. Original feature story and 30-45 second commercial written by students. Two best groups chosen from auditions.
Create a film of any kind (Drama, animation, Claymation, documentary, etc.) 2-15 students may be involved. Special effects, original music, lighting, sets, costuming, may be used. Edited by students. Time limit is 5 minutes.
FOR EACH DISTRICT CONTEST (Large Groups and Individual Events) YOU ARE ALLOWED TO ENTER IN TWO DIFFERENT EVENTS MAXIMUM.
Your preparation begins in early January for one or two events for the WaMaC Tournament
(2nd weekend in February) . If more than three people enter any event, a run-off will be used
to determine the top three entrants.
8 Minutes - no notes. Presentation of someone else’ s speech. Intro must include author and title.
8 minutes - no notes. Present a speech on any topic written by you.
6 minutes - notes allowed. Present a speech using audio and/or visual aids.
5 minutes - notes allowed. Present a humorous speech. Intro must identify a specific audience of your choice.
5 minutes - an outline is allowed. Speech is written at contest based on one current event topic that you choose from three topics that you draw. You have 3 minutes to prepare.
8 minutes - notes and some visuals allowed. Review a book , movie, drama work, music, concert, a movie made for television, or any other form of media. Information and critique, not just a plot review.
8 minutes - memorized lines and movement. No costumes or make-up. Act out a section from a play or literature (humorous or dramatic). 6 entries allowed.
5 minutes - one song only, no dialogue. Up tp three performers allowed to be taken from the number of acting performers.
5 minutes. Create and act out a story based on a drawing of a situation and two characters. 3 minutes preparation time.
6 minutes. Read interpretively from a script one or more selections of prose (not poetry).
6 minutes. Same as interpretive prose except the selection(s) must be poetry.
8 minutes. Read from a script at least one prose and one poetry selection on a common theme. Theme must be stated. A balance of prose and poetry is best.
Must be between 4 and 5 minutes. Read from selected stories you choose from wire copy provided at contest. Performance is in a room with only a microphone and a timer. 30 minutes preparation time.
5 minutes. Retell any story from any source - no notes allowed.
