Private Charles W. Clamon

Bodies of three Carter county service men who were killed in action, Private Charles Wayne Clamon, Sergeant Jay B. Hollifield and Sergeant Alvin L. Pierce, arrived this morning in Johnson City from the Army’s Atlanta distribution depot. Clamon, a former newspaper carrier salesman in the Turkeytown section near Elizabethton, was 18 at the time he was killed August 1, 1944, while serving with the U.S. Marine Corps on Tinian Island in the Pacific. He was fighting with the famed Fourth Marine Division while taking Hell’s Half Acre when he became a casualty. He trained eight months at San Diego, Calif., and was assigned to overseas duty December 5, 1943. He has been awarded the Purple Heart medal.
A graduate of Happy Valley High School, he was a member of Fairview Baptist Church.
Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Will Clamon, Watauga, route 1; two sisters, Imogene and Muriel, of Watauga.
