If you like stories about monsters, gods, and heroes, this class is for you!
There are two versions of the Mythology elective, so you can take it both years at Satz if you choose.
In the "Unanswerable Questions" version, you'll read myths from Greek, Norse, and Egyptian cultures. The myths have a unifying theme of attempting to answer the questions we may have about life but simply can't answer. This course mainly focuses on the three cultures' beliefs about the afterlife. You'll learn about Hades and his kingdom of monsters in the underworld, Odin and his army of warriors preparing to battle at Ragnarok, and learn how the Egyptians avoided getting their hearts eaten by the soul-devourer. You'll do one big project at the end of each unit, getting a chance to be inspired by the myths in your own creative ways. You'll create a choose your own adventure story, make a modern version of the end of the world, and open a business in the underworld!
In the "Morals and Ethics" version of the course, you'll still be able to explore Greek, Norse, and Egyptian myths, but these will be centered around the theme of actions & consequences: what happens when we don't do the right thing? In these stories we'll explore what each culture considered to be valuable traits among their people, and gain insight into what they considered a hero to be. These are the stories of Hercules, Perseus, Thor, Ra and Horus- brave heroes who face adversity to do the right thing! (Maybe? Sometimes? Definitely not all the time - they're only human--er, god-, after all!). You'll be able to defend a mythic figure in a mock court trial, learn about the many monsters that existed in mythology, and use your creativity to build a game of your own inspired by the fantastic heroes and beasts you read about. You'll still create 3 projects, each helping you learn a bit more about what brings us together as humans.
If time allows, we'll end the course with an exciting RPG (Role-Play Game) based in one of the three cultures. In an RPG, players take on a fake persona and explore the world and it's challenges as that figure. We let fate decide the success of our heroic attempts and react accordingly! It's a lot of fun!
