Salve discipuli!
In 8th grade, you will continue to learn the basics of the Latin language, along with more about the ancient Romans.
The adventures of our Cambridge Latin friends continue, with exciting stories about gladiators, a local election, and another thief! We'll practice using the vocabulary that you mastered in 7th grade while we learn more along the way. In 8th grade, you'll learn more about adjectives, so you'll be able to rank things like candy as "boring," "sweeter than" another, "the most delicious," or even "as disgusting as possible." It's all about the important things, really.
You'll take your world language for the entirety of the school year, unlike 7th grade which is only a half year course. With more time in class there will be more time for fun projects! You will study the modern Olympics, and have your own competitions in class. You'll dive into the ways the Romans used graffiti to advertise local election candidates - and make connections to modern practices. You'll study philosophy, the trade routes Romans used across the empire, as well as look into the science of Volcanoes- for no particular reason...!
8th grade Latin is also a great opportunity to start prepping for the SAT exam you'll take in high school. Mrs. Rihn will help you make connections between Latin vocabulary & commonly used Greek and Latin roots. 1600 here you come!
