This artist's depiction shows Baucis and Philemon (on the right) serving Jupiter and Mercury (on the left) while they are still disguised as beggars. Baucis and Philemon do not know at this time that they are serving gods, but the viewer however can see that Baucis and Philemon are serving those more noble as one can tell by how they are dressed.
This etching depicts Baucis and Philemon as they are turning into trees. Their wish is granted as they will now be able to guard the temple forever. The back ground shows earlier scenes from the story. You can see Jupiter and Mercury, with the winged hat, sitting at the table and enjoying the food while Philemon serves them. At the same time you can clearly see Baucis as she chases the goose. The goose was their watchdog and they were willing to kill it to feed who they still believed to be strangers. It is after this acts that the gods reveal themselves as gods. [See the art analysis essay for more on this piece.]
This is possibly my favorite piece of art that I have come across for Baucis and Philemon. I believe it truly expresses the point of the story. It clearly depicts Baucis and Philemon as trees. Although it doe not show the temple, it shows what was more important to them: their love. The point of turning into tress was so that one would never have to bury the other. The trees are shown embracing and happy. In the lower left corner, you can see people looking at the trees. The two trees (usually in front of the temple) became a legend and the overseers are pondering their story.
This oil painting depicts Jupiter and Mercury as beggars the best. Most artistic depictions show them as royal looking for the viewer. Despite them looking like real beggars, there are still several hints that allow the viewer to know that we are seeing well-known gods, such as the winged hat on Mercury's head and the staff next to him. Aside from the realistic depiction of the gods, many details from the story stand out, such as the goose, the scarcity of food, and how well Baucis and Philemon really take care of the strangers.
