Suggestions for Parents

Some suggestions to help your child during his or her journey to English Proficiency:

Note: you do not need to be proficient in English in order to help your child!

--be involved in your child's education!

--use your first language at home to discuss books, talk about family experiences, dicuss your child's day at school, review school work, etc.

--read to and with your child on a daily basis (in your first languageand/or English, if you are comfortable reading in English) to support children’s cognitive development and the development of literacy skills.

--communicate with the classroom teacher, interpreters are available

--contact the ESL teacher if you have any questions about the support your child is receiving

--be patient, it may take your child more than 5 years to become proficient in English
