Reporting for ELLs

Reporting Procedures for ELLs

First Step

Determine whether or not the ELL is receiving a modified programme, or is receiving accommodations to his/her grade-level program. Please see the information on modifications and accommodations provided to clarify these terms if you are unsure.

For Accommodated ELL’s

For students who are working at grade-level, but may be receiving accommodations to help them learn and demonstrate their learning effectively:

Provide students with a mark and comment as you would any other student in your class. ~You DO NOT check off the ESL box and you DO NOT write anything in the comment box that indicates the student is an ELL.

NEW for Growing Success Reports: For Modified ELL’s

For students who are NOT working at grade-level, and who have therefore been receiving a modified programme (in any subject area, not just Language), follow these steps:

a) Check off the ESL box for each subject area that is being modified.

***If the student is on an IEP for that subject area, check off the IEP box AND the ESL box. ~

***You do not use any Rider Statement at the beginning of the comment.***

What Kind of Marks Should I Be Giving My ELLs???

Because ELLs who are not working at grade-level are entitled to receive a modified programme, their marks should reflect their achievement based on modified expectations. ELLs who are working hard to learn and improve, even if their work is much more simple and at a lower grade-level, deserve to receive marks in the B and possibly A ranges. Students who are being given reasonable modifications but who are still not meeting teacher expectations may possibly receive marks in the C range. It is extremely rare to give an ELL a D or R on a report card. Those decisions need to be made in conjunction with your ESL teacher and possibly the SERT at your location.

***Finally, before report cards go home, classroom and subject-area teachers should contact parents of ELLs who are receiving modifications in class, and who are therefore receiving modified marks and comments on their report cards. It is important for parents to understand that their son/daughter is not being marked against the same expectations as their peers.

Please feel free to contact the ESL teacher if you have any questions or concerns about this process.
