Steps of Language Acquisition

There are 6 steps to language acquisition. These are not related to levels of academic achievement.

Beginning - Step 1-2 Learners:

· Use English for basic communication and survival

· Are becoming familiar with sounds, rhythms and patterns of spoken English

· Rely heavily on visual aids for understanding

· Respond non-verbally or with single words or short phrases

Developing - Step 2-3 Learners:

· Use English in supported and familiar activities and contexts

· Listen with greater understanding

· Use everyday expressions independently

· Demonstrate growing confidence

Expanding - Step 3-4 Learners:

· Use English independently in most contexts

· Speak with less hesitation

· Produce longer phrases and sentences

· Use newly-acquired vocabulary to retell, describe, explain and compare

· Read independently and use writing for a variety of purposes

Fluent - Step 5-6 Learners:

· Use English proficiently, approaching level of first-language speakers

· Use extensive vocabulary with appropriate expressions and are able to control stress, timing and rhythm of language

· Read and explore concepts in greater depth
