Courses may be classroom-based or online.
Students taking online courses will be assigned College Lab periods to work on coursework:
College Lab is required class time, not eligible for Open Campus, and may be adjusted if students are underperforming.
Course locations are listed in the HCHS Course Handbook.
All students must register through the DualEnroll program.
Counselors will meet with students to walk them through the program.
Students are responsible for registering for their own courses; counselors will review and approve all course selections.
Tuition and fees are covered by Harlan Community School District.
College-level textbooks are provided at no cost, but students and parents must sign a textbook agreement.
Textbooks, workbooks, and access codes must be returned in good condition by the end of the semester. Failure to do so will result in billing to parents.
Courses count toward both HCHS graduation and IWCC transcripts.
Grades appear on both high school and college transcripts.
College credits may transfer to other colleges, but students should check transfer policies and keep their syllabus.
A grade of C or higher is typically required for transfer.
Students may drop a course within 3 HCHS school days of the semester start.
Drops after this deadline require administrative approval and result in an F on the HCHS transcript.
Students must follow the IWCC calendar, not HCHS’s calendar.
Students provide their own transportation for IWCC campus courses or field trips.
Attendance, assignment tracking, and communication with professors are the student’s responsibility.
Student Responsibilities Include:
Attend IWCC orientation before classes begin.
Track assignments using Canvas and the syllabus.
Use College Lab periods to complete coursework.
Check IWCC and HCHS email regularly.
Attend all in-person sessions.
Communicate with professors for questions, absences, or academic concerns.
Return all textbooks and access codes at the end of the semester.
Monitor grades and GPA; counselors receive updates every 5 weeks.
Counselor Responsibilities:
Enroll students in IWCC courses
Plan course load and college pathway
Support students after they attempt problem-solving
Advocate with IWCC when necessary
IWCC/Professor Responsibilities:
Assign, teach, and grade coursework
Respond to student inquiries
Provide syllabus and course materials
Post updates via email
Handle technical issues (HCHS tech team assists with firewalls)
Concurrent enrollment is an incredible opportunity to earn college credit and prepare for post-secondary success—but it also comes with college-level expectations. Success requires responsibility, organization, and communication. Students who meet these expectations can benefit from a strong start to their college education while still in high school.
