The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the first step in applying for financial aid for college, including federal grants, loans, and work-study programs. Completing it early gives you the best chance to receive aid.
Both the student and a parent need an FSA ID (username and password) to sign the FAFSA electronically.
Go to studentaid.gov/fsaid to create your FSA ID.
Keep your FSA ID safe—this is your electronic signature for FAFSA.
Before starting, have the following ready:
Social Security Number (student and parent)
Driver’s license (if you have one)
2024 tax returns (student and parent)
Records of untaxed income (child support, veterans benefits, etc.)
Bank statements and investment records
Go to studentaid.gov and select “Start 2026–2027 FAFSA.”
Log in with your FSA ID.
Follow the on-screen instructions to enter personal, financial, and household information.
Use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool if possible—it automatically imports tax information to reduce errors.
List all colleges you are considering so they can receive your FAFSA information.
Sign electronically with your FSA ID.
Submit the FAFSA once complete. You can make corrections later if needed.
After submission, you’ll see a confirmation page—save a copy for your records.
Colleges will use your FAFSA data to create a financial aid package.
You may receive a Student Aid Report (SAR)—review it carefully for accuracy.
✅ Complete your FAFSA as soon as possible after October 1, 2025.
✅ Double-check all social security numbers and tax info.
✅ Contact your counselor if you need help or if you don’t have access to a parent’s tax information.
✅ Keep a copy of everything you submit.
