In addition to the ideas below, if you would like to help on our South School Campus...please ask about: Art in Action, hot lunch service, library helpers and classroom volunteer opportunities.
· Recognizing the importance of social preparedness more than academic
(can your child share, ignore poor behaviors, listen, accept responsibility, demonstrate pride in work etc.)
· Holding your child accountable for all actions/choices
(If your child forgets their backpack/sharing/homework…it is not YOUR fault-establish responsibility).
· Emphasize neatness, organization skills, etc. Have your child clean their room and tidy up after things at home…they will be expected to keep their desk and classroom clean and organized…start these good behaviors early at home.
· Listening skills are so important…help turn your child into a good and respectful listener…using eye contact, not interrupting etc.
· Don’t baby your child at school…no holding, allowing baby talk, whining etc. We know they are your babies, but, save the extra coddling for home.
· Help instill independent problem solving skills…don’t solve the problem for your child…help them work through it. Remember the importance of acknowledging that social altercations do happen at school…teachers and principals will help handle the problem at school. Be careful not to judge other children on behaviors that unfortunately, but true, can be common and developmental.
· Let your kid be a kid…don’t overextend them with “activities”
· Most teachers don’t use the word BORED…boring people allow themselves to be bored!
· Help your child be independent and self-motivated to reach out for tasks in the classroom.
