Workshops

What We Offer

The Writing Center is excited to announce that we are now offering workshops as a new writing support resource. Each workshop consists of a PowerPoint presentation and an interactive activity, and is delivered by one of our consultants. These workshops are designed to last 30 minutes each, with the exceptions of the MLA and APA Citation workshops, which last 45 minutes each.

We currently have 8 workshops available: Introduction and Conclusion, Literature Review, Personal Statement, Parallel Construction, Punctuation, Thesis Construction, MLA Citation, and APA Citation. We anticipate adding to our library of workshops as part of our ongoing work.

The Writing Center currently offers only the workshops listed below. If you would like to discuss the possibility of a workshop outside of these topics, please contact us at tutors@hawaii.edu.

If you are an instructor and would like to request a workshop, please fill in and submit the form to the right. If you are a student and are interested in having a workshop presented in your class, please ask your instructor if they would like to schedule a visit. We ask that you make all requests at least one week in advance.

NOTE: Workshops are not intended to substitute for a class period, but rather supplement it, and as our consultants are not university faculty, we ask that instructors remain present throughout the workshops.

Presentation Descriptions

Introduction and Conclusion (~30 min.) Supplies students with helpful tips on how to construct introduction and conclusion paragraphs. Our presentation focuses on explaining what makes a strong introduction and conclusion in order to better tie together the academic paper as a whole.

Literature Review (~45 min.) Provides students with an understanding of how to craft a Literature Review. Our consultants will go over writing an introduction and thesis, drafting the review, and the difference between summary and synthesis.

Personal Statement (~30 min.) Presents students with tips on how to construct a personal statement when applying to graduate school or for scholarships. Our consultants will discuss how to construct the introduction, body paragraphs, and the conclusion while maintaining a writerly voice.

Parallel Construction (~30 min.) Covers how students can avoid creating false parallelisms and incorrect grammatical structures in their written work. Our consultants describe what parallel construction is and how it can be properly implemented in academic writing to improve overall readability and clarity.

Punctuation (~30 min.) Reviews the proper use of various punctuation such as commas, semicolons, periods, quotation marks, exclamation points, and question marks. Consultants will discuss what these punctuations are, their functions, and techniques that will aid students in generating correct sentences.

Thesis Construction (~30 min.) Provides students with an overview on how to construct a thesis statement for their writing assignments. Specifically, our presentation focuses on explaining what makes a strong thesis statement and how it is meant to guide the formation and organization of the subsequent arguments or claims made within an academic paper.

MLA Citation (9th Ed.) (~45 min.) Informs students on how to properly cite information in an academic essay in order to avoid plagiarism. Our consultants will go over how to format in-text citations and works cited pages for a variety of different media (i.e. how to cite a video, book, speech, interview, etc.) using MLA citation.

APA Citation (7th Ed.) (~45 min.) Informs students on how to properly cite information in an academic essay in order to avoid plagiarism. Our consultants will go over how to format in-text citations and works cited pages for a variety of different media (i.e. how to cite a video, book, speech, interview, etc.) using APA citation.
