Our 2020 Spring student research cohort will focus on Kapapapuhi Point Park of Kaihuopalaʻai/West loch. For our first meeting of the semester we met with Sandy Ward from Hui O Hoʻohonu at Kapapapuhi Point Park to get an overview of the area and issues. Hui O Hoʻohonua is the non-profit organization coordinating efforts to restore Puʻuloa/Pearl Harbor to a more healthy, productive and sustainable state. One group of students will help Hui O Hoʻohonua by propagating, acclimating and planting native plants that can withstand the harsh climate after mangrove removal. The other group will continue with our efforts to describe the plankton of Puʻuloa and to better understand environmental factors affecting its abundance and diversity.
