Identifying English Learners (ELs)

All parents/guardians must complete a green Home Language Survey (HLS) form upon in enrollment in Hardin County Schools. This form is used solely to offer appropriate educational services, not for determining legal status or for immigration purposes. If a language other than English is indicated for any of the questions, the student is considered to be a language minority student and is assessed for ESL services using the appropriate WIDA screening test. More information about the WIDA screening assessment can be found here. here.

After the assessment is complete, a letter is sent to parents indicating if students qualify for ESL services. Parents of qualifying students are invited to the school for a meeting to discuss test results and develop a Program Service Plan (PSP) for the school year.
