Assessment

English Learners (ELs) are tested annually with the ACCESS test. In KY, we test our students during January and early February of each school year. Results of the ACCESS test are shared with parents in May.

The test reports each student's English language ability in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English. Each state in the WIDA consortium decides the cut-off score for students to exit the ESL program. In Kentucky, students need to reach an overall proficiency score of 4.5 or higher to exit from ESL services.

ACCESS test results are used to identify students who exit the program each year, to show student growth in English Language ability, and to help us plan their program of English instruction for the next school year.
