Every year, students are encouraged to create their own small ensembles (trios, quartets, quintets, etc.) based on student interest and instrumentation (strings, winds, brass and other instruments). Typically, these groups are student-initiated and self-directed. Occasionally a group may be directed by a musician/teacher from outside the school. Representative ensembles could include Brass Choir, Clarinet Choir, Sax Quartet, Flute Choir, Jazz Combo, Woodwind Quintet, String Trio, and Drumline.
These groups provide students with an excellent opportunity to develop their own organizational, leadership, independence, musical and creative skills as well as an enjoyable, positive way to spend time together. There are guidelines that clarify a uniform set of expectations for all the groups. Though student-directed, a connection to the Music Department is strong. As musical ensembles of HHS they are generally perceived by both school and community members as part of the Music Department, and whether rehearsing or performing on or off school premises, the groups must comply with HHS guidelines.
All school rules regarding behavior and controlled substances, per the Student Handbook, apply to rehearsals, gatherings, and performances (on and off campus) by ensembles. Repertoire selection/presentation must be within appropriate limits for the school and audience.
Please discuss any interest in forming an instrumental combo with the band or string director before rehearsing as a group.
