A Cappella Groups

Overview:

Student-directed vocal ensembles have a long history at Hanover High School in the form of three a cappella groups: Soarthroats (male voices), Hilights (female voices) and DaChords (mixed voices). These groups rehearse at HHS from 2-3:00 pm on Wednesdays and on Sundays in members’ homes. They run their own auditions, select their own leaders and choose their own repertoire with supervision of a school advisor (the chorus director.) Their performances include Music Dept. concerts, presentations at in-school events, elementary and middle school concerts, Acappellooza and occasional community performances.

These groups provide students with an excellent opportunity to develop their own organizational, leadership, independence, musical and creative skills as well as an enjoyable, positive way to spend time together. There are a set of guidelines that clarify a uniform set of expectations for all the groups. Though student-directed and officially within the auspices of HHS Student Activities, a connection to the Music Department is equally strong. As musical ensembles of HHS they are generally perceived by both school and community members as part of the Music Department. As such, all school rules regarding behavior and controlled substances, per the Student Handbook, apply to rehearsals, gatherings, and performances (on and off campus) by ensembles. Repertoire selection/presentation must be within appropriate limits for the school and audience (language, dress, content, etc.).

A Cappella Groups Attendance/Participation Guidelines:

It is an honor to be selected as a member of the a cappella groups at HHS, and as such, members also have certain responsibilities. Next to vocal/musical ability, the most important aspect of a singer’s contribution is his/her attendance and positive participation. Dependability is crucial in these relatively small groups where each person has a special/significant role and everyone is interdependent. Adherence to the guidelines is required in order for individuals to do their best and for the groups to achieve maximum success, namely, have a great time together making excellent music!
