Most schools formulate at BMI in physical education class. If you should have any questions on whether or not your child is in the healthy zone, please consult with his/her PE teacher and/or doctor.
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure of body fat calculated based upon height and weight.
BMI= weight/height2
In adults BMI is not not dependent on age or sex.
BMI below 18.5: Underweight
BMI 18.5-24.9: Normal
BMI 25-29.9: Overweight
BMI 30.0 and above: Obese
For children, the standard BMI calculation for adults can not be used because with children sex and age are taken into account. This important because the amount of body fat changes with age and the amount of body fat differs between boys and girls. Therefore it is important to use a BMI percentile chart, which works for all age groups. This chart will compare children BMI percentile to other children of the same age and gender.
BMI 1st-4th percentile: Underweight
BMI 5th-84th percentile: Healthy weight
BMI 85th-94th percentile: Overweight
BMI 95th-100th percentile: Obese
