Hear me now, believe me later: The Crucible is not about witchcraft; it's a metaphor for McCarthyism in America in the 1950s. Miller wrote the play to help people see that what he experienced under McCarthy was essentially a legally sanctioned witch hunt fed on fear and motivated by a power grab, just as the events in Salem in 1692 were essentially a legally- and religiously sanctioned witch hunt fed on fear and motivated by power grabs.
THE CRUCIBLE, by Arthur Miller
This is a fact-based account of the witch hunts and trials that affect the Puritans in early America. Follow the path of love, lust, betrayal, lies, manipulation, and honor as the fine, upstanding members of this community fall victim to the plottings and selfish actions of young Abigail Williams who tries to destroy her lover's wife and raise herself to a place of glory. Join John Proctor as he strives to save Elizabeth and, consequently, his own good name and sense of honor.
What's a crucible? It can be a thing or an experience.

1) the quote with citation (Act #, scene #, page #), speaker, audience, and context (situation=what was happening at the time) 2) Why did you select that particular quote? Why is it important? 3) An image (no copyright infringement!) and it's URL. [Don't know how to check? In GDrive, go to TOOLS->RESEARCH. The Research screen will pop up on the right of your document. Then, pull down to Images, and type in what you are searching. Make sure to use the pull-down to select "Free to use, share or modify, even commercially." Anything that pops up can be used.] "4) The names of the people on your team. Please put the names in 12-point font in the lower-right corner. Color and font will help sell your image.

The Big Ol' Essay
Use the play The Crucible (not currently on Netflix...sorry), and also incorporate the Murrow and McCarthy speeches provided by your teacher. You need to use both sources and all five relevant scenes/texts.
Here is the packet I gave out in class on 1 Dec 2014. It lost some of the formatting when I put it in GDrive, so use the .pdf (linked in previous sentence) if you want a pretty version. Use the one this link if you want to be able to copy, paste, and edit.
All sources should be cited in a properly formatted Works Cited page. This should be the last page in your essay, not a separate document.
Essay should be typed in GDrive and saved into the folder you shared with your teacher for this class. The final product will be due to turnitin.com no later than 8 p.m. two days after the written copy is due. (S.O.P.) and must be submitted to GClass, too.
A properly formatted paper is due on the way in the door on <<date>>. This rough draft will be peer edited in class on <<date>>. A revised draft is due <<date>>. The final draft will be due <<date>>.
