Quarter One: Math Engineering Unit: Big Me
Connect: You're big and getting bigger every day! But there's a lot involved in being big - like having long arms and legs. What else makes you the big person you are? Do you have a friend who's taller than you, or has smaller feet, or longer arms? Have you ever compared your height with that of a friend by standing back to back?
Construct: Make a model of yourself. Compare it with a model your friend has made. Who has the biggest model? Did the tallest person build the tallest model?
Quarter Two: Literacy Engineering Unit: Bedtime Friends
Connect: We read Bedtime for Frances. Frances had trouble falling asleep, and her imagination played tricks on her.
Construct: We worked with our color groups to build a special night-time creature which will watch over children while they sleep.
Quarter Three: Literacy Engineering Unit: Building Bears
Connect: We read The Three Bears.
Construct: We worked with our color groups to build a model of Papa Bear, Mama Bear, and Baby Bear. Children were challenged to put the three bears in order according to size. This is an excellent activity in size relationships.
Quarter Four: Math Engineering Unit: Trucks
Connect: Have you ever seen a truck carrying too big a load? When hauling things in a truck, it’s very important to be sure the truck is big enough to carry everything you put in it. You certainly don’t want your things falling out onto the street along the way!
Construct: We worked with our color groups to build a truck. We also estimated how many “blocks” would fit inside the truck.
