Confederate Bands

There were fewer Confederate bands than Union bands for several reasons:

• There were not as many musicians in the South.

• Instruments were expensive and very difficult to get because metal was in short supply in the South and most instrument makers were in the North.

• Most Confederate bands were dismissed after the first year of the war due to lack of money.

• The bands that remained often used music from Union songbooks and instruments found on the battlefield after a battle or "captured" instruments taken from prisoners.
