Chandler's Band from Portland, Maine

This information from the book, "Music of the Civil War Era" by Steven Cornelius:

The Union's 1st Regiment of Artillery Band was present during the bombardment and surrender on Fort Sumter. This band was also known as Chandler’s Band of Portland, Maine! In 1861, Daniel Chandler and his band joined the Union Army and they served until the close of the Civil War.

The musicians did not play music during the attack on Fort Sumter. Instead, they were busy filling cartridge bags with gun powder and carrying ammunition. After the 34 hour fight was finished and the surrender negotiated, the bandsmen took out their instruments. They played "Yankee Doodle" and "Hail To The Chief" as the regiment marched out of the fort to board the Union ship Baltic for the long trip northward where they would receive a hero's welcome in New York Harbor.

You can still join Chandler's Band! It is believed to be the second oldest, continually running professional band! Here is a video of Chandler's Band at The Yarmouth Clam Festival in 2012:
