Year 2 is divided into two classes.

Mrs Yoxall, Mrs Collins and Mrs Evans are the teachers.

Termly Theme / Topic

Welcome to Year 2!

Year 2-

Our topic this term is “Hi Ho Hi Ho it’s off to work we go!” We will be learning all about the classic Disney story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. We will have our own Cottage and diamond mine roleplay in class and will be visiting a real mine where we will learn about the history of coal mining and its importance in Wales. We will also be visiting Cyfarthfa Castle for a ‘Once upon a time’ workshop.

In Language, Literacy and Communication, we will be learning to retell the story of Snow White in the style of Pie Corbett using actions, drama and story maps. We will also be learning about the features of stories and creating our own fairytales by innovating the original story. We will be learning how to make our writing more interesting using adjectives to describe good and evil characters from the story and how to construct simple sentences linked to the story.

In Maths, we will be learning about place value, comparing and ordering numbers and addition and subtraction. We will be learning to recall our number bonds to 10, 20 and beyond and how to find the difference between numbers. We will be looking at identifying odd and even numbers and simple multiplication. We will also be completing daily CLIC sessions where we will be working on our counting, learn it’s and calculations.

As part of our topic, we will be creating our own Artwork using charcoal and also using mirrors to create self portraits. We will be looking at the still life lantern artwork of Dennis Wilkinson and creating our own versions of this. We will also be learning about feelings and relationships and how these make us all unique and special.

We will be celebrating the end of our topic with a special assembly to share all of our amazing work and achievements!

Out Autumn Topic:

Out And About

We will be sharing many stories in class including Goldilocks and The Three Bears and The three Little Pigs.

We will be learning about where we live, people who help us and stranger danger.

The children have said they would like to make and taste porridge with different toppings in class.

During the term we will investigate hot and cold and the best materials to build a house.

At the end of the term we will celebrate with a Teddy Bears Picnic!

Important class information

Year 2 start school at 8.45am and finish at 2.45pm. Please make sure you adhere to these times and the Year 2 staff will be situated on the infant yard to collect and dismiss the children each day.

Please make sure your child brings a piece of fruit to school for their snack and a bottle of water.

PE is every Wednesday so make sure your child wears their PE kit to school.

We use class dojo to keep in touch with parents so make sure you sign up to this! If you have any questions about this please feel free to speak to the classroom teacher on the yard at the start or end of the school day.
